<aside> 🍃 Nanako Matsumoto is a dance artist who works with performance and language- separately and in various combinations. She is the co-director of the performance unit team chiipro, where she collaborates closely with dramaturg Kengo Nishimoto to create research-based dance works. Together, they have presented critically recognized pieces at Kyoto Experiment in Autumn 2021 and 2022. A defining feature of their work is the use of text based on meticulous research. Through this approach, Nanako investigates intersections of history, society, anthropology, geography, and personal physical memory—embedding the body itself as both subject and medium of inquiry. In recent years, she has been developing the concept of the “妖怪Body”—a state of physical and conceptual transformation (化け), where multiple images are layered onto the body. Through this evolving choreographic language, she explores metamorphosis within the body and dance, offering a new lens through which to examine and redefine the female body.

NewDance Technologies is a dance project initiated in 2024 by Nanako Matsumoto, Kengo Nishimoto and Keisuke Sakurai as a study group which studies dances of K-Pop girl’s group “NewJeans”. From 2025, Pijin Neji joined.
